Abilities:
James Gordon, once a member of military special forces, an elite tactical team, he was trained to perform high-risk and very dangerous missions. As a result he is physically robust for his age and trained in hand-to-hand combat expertly, continuing to train regularly and exercising everyday in the police gym. He is also a very confident individual as well as courageous. He was trained to think levelly in high risk situations and is a very looked for leader as a result. The skills he earned in special forces, strategy and level-headedness as well as a strong mental construct makes him an expert police captain whose career is bright in Gotham.
In both his previous hometown and in Gotham, Gordon has taken and continues to take criminology classes. He is proficient in criminal detective work and after having served in the police force of Chicago before being transferred to Gotham City, he is also well versed in police procedure.
Equipment:
Being a police officer, Gordon possesses standard issue police equipment. He carries a standard issue .38 caliber handgun for both protection and threatening as all police officers are required to carry a firearm to guard the community. When patrolling in a squad car, he is also equipped with a 12 gauge shotgun that is used in close range against armed assailants. He uses both buckshot for close-range and carries slugs in his equipment belt which holds his pistol as well for distance that are beyond 20 yards. He also has access to a gun that shoots bean bags when deadly force isn't necessary.
Another item he is oft to carry are metal handcuffs. Specially made for police to be harder to pick than generic handcuffs, they are the most utilized item in Gordon's arsenal. He uses them to save both himself, his fellow officers, and the criminal from unnecessary and additional injuries. He carries an average of two to three pairs on his belt in case he has to take down multiple perpetrators alone.
As an officer, Gordon is often in the line of fire so he wears a soft bulletproof vest beneath his uniform. This protects him against from most pistols, shotguns, rifles, knives, arrows, and small explosions, so they don't penetrate and cause massive damage, however they fail to prevent any blunt force trauma that ensues after being struck by a bullet or other weapon.
Though it's a fairly new piece of equipment, Gordon has a Tazer Gun. This piece of equipment. Gaining popularity is quite effective at neutralizing a suspect, yet causing little to no harm to them in process. The tazer gun can travel around 15 feet and penetrate most articles of clothing while still being able to inflict 50,000 volts. This is enough to temporary incapacitate a suspect, allowing the officer to make a safe arrest.
Attached to his belt, for use against unarmed, yet aggressive perpetrators, is a police baton. Though, it's not used by him often it makes him feel safer. These are generally used to control and disperse non-compliant people, like those that could arise after a sporting event or defending against unarmed, but dangerous assailants. They are also effective to break down doors and windows to help trapped victims whose lives are in imminent danger.
Effective for lighting the night and also able to be attached to his pistol, Gordon carries a small, but powerful Surefire flashlight, which puts out a radiant 200+ lumens. Able to light his way in pitch blackness, Jim considers the flashlight an important asset to keep him safe.
Gordon usually keeps his police issue knife in the car, unless he deems it absolutely necessary because the weapon is so easily taken could fall into the hands of the criminal he's trying to pursue. Yet he carries a knife which can have many functions from helping victims that are stranded to breaking some barriers and of course for its protection, yet he trusts his pistol the most.
James Gordon loves his tobacco and he often smokes it from a pipe. His favorite tobacco is Wild Country, a rich musty, blend that tantalizes the palate. He often carries a beautiful, sealed and protected wooden pipe that was hand carved. It's made of dark wood and he stores it in his coat pocket along with a pack of cheap matches he buys at the gas station near the police station.
Weaknesses:
Although, he is still strong for his age, Gordon is forty and is slower and heavier than he used to be. He is also a smoker, so his lung capacity isn't what it used to be either. He plans to quit smoking soon, but with the stress of his police job, the addiction helps him cope.
His morality and determination can be annoying to some of his colleagues who view him as a threat. He's clean and selfless and this puts some of his fellow officers on edge. His stubbornness to help also can land him into situations that can take a lot of mental and physical footwork to get out of.
Background:
Originally born in Chicago, he was schooled in the public school system by his middle class parents. He lived surrounded by the crime of the local mobs and everyday saw the evidence of the perpetual war between them. From a young age he was determined to clean up the streets and after graduating high school, he studied at the local community college before entering the military at his father's pushing. There he was trained in combat and weaponry and placed on a tactile team as a part of the U.S. Special forces. He served his nation overseas gaining intelligence and experience in tracking and strategy while working in tough and hazardous conditions.
This was where he picked up his smoking habit. He returned to Chicago at the age of twenty-three and immediately entered the police academy while taking classes in a newly established criminology field at the local community college. He quickly became an officer, passing his tests with flying colors. These days he would remember fondly upon getting transferred to Gotham, though at the time he didn't think of them
He met his wife, Barbara Eileen Gordon, in a small popular diner the police usually ate at during their longer hours. She was serving as a waitress there, and he was instantly smitten. She played hard to get, but eventually Jim's tenacity paid off and they began to date. They were married a year later and Barbara learned the fear that came with being the wife of a cop as she witnessed the dangers her husband faced. Gordon noticed and he tried to keep her cheered up and positive. He felt he was doing good, though, his relationships in the force were strained because of his morality. Gordon was one of only a few good cops, and faced brutality from his fellows. Gordon uncovered corruption in the force and even brought down some of his own after discovering a rigged mayoral election. Jim made many enemies as men lost their jobs, but he stayed in the force until one event would change the course of his life forever.
James Gordon shot a dirty cop and his wife as they were fleeing a scene of a crime at a warehouse, both were armed, but the event shook the man deeply and life wasn't made easier. He was at the time having martial problems with his wife, who wanted to try and have a baby, but Gordon wasn't ready and with all the pressure didn't think it would be a good time. Yet the couple he had shot had a son and and the captain of the force, threatened the boy's life if Gordon didn't transfer elsewhere. Gordon had no choice, he accepted a transfer and soon he and his wife found themselves in Gotham.
He has been serving in Gotham for five years, each day a fight. The city is even more corrupt and crime-infested than Chicago and now he has a young son to care for as well. James Jr. was born a year after the move and has quickly become another anchor for the man. James Gordon, now a Police Lieutenant in the Gotham Police Department feels even more alone and everyday and night he awakes and slumbers, holding his family close and knowing the cold, bullet of fear that he carries in his gut everyday.

He rolled the sweet-smelling tobacco between his fingers, feeling its texture and noting its color. It was darker than the stained, cream walls that made up his office. His door was closed, but he could every so often note the passing shadows of other officers and secretaries. Yet, right now, the force wasn't important, not the people who made a chatter in the hall. He'd learned to drown them out in his years in a similar station. Instead, he picked up the pipe his wife had brought him for their first anniversary from its position beside his hand. He stuffed the tobacco into it and held it the object between his lips as he fished a match from the pocket of his trench coat, that was lazily hanging on the back of the chair he currently inhabited.
He lit the pungent leaves and inhaled a breath of relaxing nicotine. He exhaled the smoke from between his lips and it filtered out on both sides of the pipe as he opened the manila folder on his desk.
Another face, another victim of Gotham's streets. As a cop, you were supposed to grow a hardened face to the victim, even at forty, he'd not managed that. He felt a strange connection to all his cases. He yearning to do right by them. He had pinned flier after flier of the missing on his walls. Gang related and the like. Gotham was dark, but he knew there had to be a light somewhere. Darkness could not exist without it, now it just finding it. He sighed in a haggard breath and his eyes flickered to the black phone perched on the corner of his desktop. Before he knew what he was doing, he had the phone cradled at his ear, fingers dialing his home number.
He wanted to hear the voice of his son. His son gave him the courage to keep fighting. He wanted a better life for him, he wanted him to see the light Gotham was hiding.
