Civilian Identity
Edward Nigma
Alias
The Riddler, Edward Nashton
Gender
Male
Age
31
Occupation
Computer programmer and electronics technician for Wayne TeleComm (a Division of WayneTech Industries).
Appearance
6'1, 150 lbs, cheek length auburn/light brown hair, brown eyes.
Personality
Edward Nigma holds a deep seeded hatred for those he perceives as less intelligent than himself. He suffers from a massive ego and an unrelenting need to prove himself smarter than everyone else. He's self centred and to most, uncaring.
To those he holds in his intellectual bracket, he can be thoughtful and even gentlemanly. He hides his past abuses behind a veil of superiority.
Since an early age he's been fascinated with puzzles, over time learning all he could about them and with a particular focus on riddles. This obsession led to an innate pathological need to double talk; whereby he would speak, leave or create a puzzle that while superficially seems innocent, actually describes his inner thoughts.
Abilities:
- Genius level intellect.
- Technical aptitude makes him a successful gadgeteer.
- Computer hacker.
- Minor fighting ability from being forced into martial arts as a child.
Equipment:
The most prominent item is his cane, the head of which is shaped like a question mark. Contained within can be any number of electronic devices, such as code scramblers and code breakers, RF or IR transmitters and receivers.
Nigma also has a penchant for explosives, often hidden inside puzzle boxes, or utilizing puzzles for timers, primers and disablers.
He carries a smart phone that he has custom designed and programmed to perform a number of functions.
Weaknesses:
His over inflated ego can be used against him. His emotions can be used against him - if he's pushed hard enough to become angry.
Background:
Edward was the quiet kid with few if not any friends, made fun of and sometimes even bullied at school. No one hit harder than his dad though and he didn't even need to use fists.
His mother was the silent type, never getting in the way of her husband who belittled his son's desire to read and play with toys and puzzles. He wanted a man in his family and instead was given a weakling in his eyes. He'd push Edward towards sports and martial arts to toughen him up, but Edward wouldn't take to it like his old man would want. Edward just wanted to be smart and wanted to be nothing like his father, the abusive and violent drunk who watched Nascar and beat his wife.
School gave him many options to try: one such opportunity was a school-wide contest to solve a series of puzzles. The winner would be revered and with that, Edward saw a chance and showing his dad that brains could be just as strong, if not stronger than braun. The contest would be on Friday, giving everyone two days to sign up and in the meantime the various puzzles and word games were put on display.
Edward was angry. He didn't understand them at first. He thought he was smart and four of the five challenges he could figure out, but the last one left him troubled. It wouldn't do! In order to prove himself and win the competition, he would need to solve all five!
With only one more night between him and the contest he put together a plan. Under the cover of dark he broke into the school and into the teacher's office. He found the filing cabinet easy enough and inside he found the solution sheet for the puzzle. What he hadn't expected was that it was easier than he imagined! The solution was simple, almost insultingly so! But yet, he had the answer.
The contest went as he expected and in the end he was declared the winner. He went home as fast as he could to tell his parents, to have them congratulate him. That was not the case.
His father refused to believe he was good enough for that. That his family was not smart enough for it. He hit his son for lying about winning something when he believed it was not possible. His mother tried to intervene, but he hit her too.
Edward snapped. He found the baseball bat quicker than he imagined... as if is was in his hand the whole time and without a thought, he swung it as hard as he could.
Of all the things to regret, what Edward regretted most was not that he killed his father, causing his mother to be institutionalized; but that he could never prove his father wrong. In the end, the last thing Edward had done was give in to braun.
The specifics of that night never surfaced publicly, Edward being too young for an adult judicial system. It was labeled as self defence and after years of therapy and life in a group home, Edward Nashton - having changed his name to Edward Nigma - fought hard to study, go to college and eventually university.
His knack for problem solving and his aptitude for electronics, as well as a degree in information technology landed him a job with WayneTech Industries. He would help redefine the telecommunications market.
His job wouldn't go so smoothly over time, however. He believed the future of telecommunications was in mimicking a sort of telepathy, wherein people would not need handheld devices and instead they could all be internal. Implants that could send and receive data, linking everyone on a global level.
When he was told that there was no funding to try a different approach, as his was much too dangerous; and to 'go about his normal work', Edward Nigma decided to investigate. Fox stated there was no money in R&D and in the end, Fox was right. The whole department had seemingly disappeared overnight. It had happened not long after Bruce Wayne had returned.
It was turning into quite the puzzle and Edward always liked puzzles. Hacking into the system was not difficult and some of the items that showed up being accessed filled his mind with more questions than he had answers.
Grappling guns? Memory cloth? A prototype Infantry Battle Suit?
It wasn't until the News gave light to what all those could add up to, that Nigma found his answer. Someone was running around Gotham City dressed like a bat, using technology locked away in the basement of WayneTech!

Edward Nigma marched briskly into Mr. Fox's office, carrying with him a stack of papers in a crisp file folder. His suit was neat and his glasses sat firmly on the bridge of his nose and as Fox took notice of his caller, Edward turned, closed the door and sat across from the older man. "Mr. Fox, I wanted to speak with you about our earlier meeting."
Mr. Fox furrowed his brow, but his face didn't lose any sense of severity. "As I said Mr. Nigma, there simply isn't any funding available to look into other avenues for your ideas. They're simply too dangerous how you've already planned them and too expensive to try another approach."
Nigma shook his head and handed he file folder over, encouraging Fox to take them. "I'm not here to discuss that. I've uncovered something."
The older man raised an eyebrow and took the file calmly, opening it up and beginning to flip through the loose papers within. "What is it that I'm supposed to be looking at?"
Edward was straining to keep his calm. "What does it take to fly around Gotham, fighting crime and dressed like a bat? You've seen him on the News?"
Fox hid whatever he might have been thinking, but to Nigma he seemed like he was playing dumb. Nigma pushed again. "The whole department - Research and Development - went missing. Now I went down there and it still exists, but not on the books."
"You went down there?" Fox asked. "You don't have the clearance for that level of Applied Sciences."
Nigma was feeling the anger well inside him. Fox was either too ignorant to catch on, or he just didn't care! "But Bruce Wayne is -"
Fox cut him off. "The man signing your pay checks. Now we can continue this discussion and I can go over your generous severance package, or you can go back to TeleComm and politely refrain from any more breaches in company policy... a Policy that you yourself agreed to by working here."
Edward straightened up and took a breath. "Yes, Mr. Fox."
With that said, the older man smiled as he so often did. "You've been doing a good job Mr. Nigma. Good day."
The younger man responded with a curt nod, exiting the office.
As he marched down the hall to the elevator, his brain ran laps around the problem. What does it take to influence the heart and mind, Mr. Fox? More money than god.
